What is torture?
(Politics)

If I hear one more person accuse the Bush administration of torture, I'm going to scream! These people obviously don't understand what torture is. They should go and read some World War II history and learn from the real torture masters. What the Japanese did to our soldiers held as prisoners of war is a much better illustration of torture — not scaring someone with some harmless bugs.

I have a very simple definition of torture. If it will leave permanent physical injury, then yes, it's probably torture. Scaring someone, making them uncomfortable, depriving them of sleep, forcing them to listen to Barney music, etc. do not qualify. A friend of mine who was once in military intelligence, told me of a rather ingenious technique they could use. I don't want to reveal what it is, but let's say they could give the subject a perfectly harmless substance that has a temporary effect on a body that could be scary if you don't know about it. Sorry gang, that's not torture either.

Now understand, I don't want our men and women subjected to the same harsh interrogation techniques we use, but I don't want them to be shot at by the enemy either. What I want isn't part of the equation because, guess what folks, that's war. In war, bad things can happen to the men and women in our armed forces. Our military personnel know this going in and they volunteer anyway. That's one of the reasons I hold them in such high regard. And remember, we only use these harsh interrogation techniques against the hard-core bad guys we think possess knowledge of upcoming attacks. America shows enormous restraint already. Quit handicapping our ability to protect and defend this great nation.
